What You Need to Know About Ultrasonic Cleaning
The best way to clean a circuit board is to clean it with ultrasound. In this process, the circuit board is immersed in a liquid and exposed to high-frequency sound waves. This causes the liquid to vibrate and the particles on the board to move. This separates the components on the board from the liquid and removes the liquid that has accumulated on the board.
The circuit board is then placed in an IPA bath. It is then dried in air or in temperature-controlled drying ovens. The circuit boards are then ready for testing.
While this process removes liquid contaminants, it does not fix any of the problems associated with PCB components. Rather, the use of an ultrasonic bath may actually damage these components. For this reason, it is important to use an ultrasonic bath only as a last resort when attempting to clean an electronic device.
It is advisable to perform ultrasonic bath cleaning only after an initial inspection has been performed and all defective or missing components have been replaced. If solder leads remaining on the board after microsoldering, this can cause short circuit to the board and component.
